Books Read: Carrie Duffy - Diva

STUNNING AND SULTRY, DIONNE SUMMERS IS A GIRL WHO SPEAKS HER MINDS.

Brought up on the mean streets of Detroit, she is determined that nothing will stop her from becoming the world's next supermodel.
Beautiful and innocent, Alyson McIntyre is desperate her upbringing.  She decides it's time to take a hold on her life and follow her dreams.

Heading to the chic streets of Paris, the girls move in with a maverick young designer CeCe Bouvier.  Born to a life of luxury, CeCe is determined to stand on her own two feet and take the fashion world by storm.

The girls vow to make it to the top, but their friendship is about to be tested to the limits when deception, betrayal and tragedy are played out in the glare of the paparazzi flashbulbs.

Can the three girls overcome the ghosts of the past - or will the catwalk consume them?

I won a copy of Carrie Duffy's debut novel Idol last year but I have to confess that this is still waiting to be read in my increasing TBR pile.  However, I did read her exclusive short story prequel VIP before I started reading Diva.

The story follows three young women as they try to make a name for themselves and escape from their pasts.  Dionne, a feisty young girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is determined to escape from the predictability of her life and become a Supermodel, CeCe,  who has led a privileged life but wants to make it in the world of fashion on her own merit, and Alyson, a timid young girl who wants to become a successful businesswoman but being stuck at home looking after her mum it's looking unlikely that this will happen.

Fast forward a couple of years and the three women all find themselves in Paris and sharing a flat.  Dionne is still trying to make it big as a model but at least she's getting some modelling work, CeCe is designing clothes in the evenings after she's finished work at a clothing store.  Alyson has been working in a bar since arriving in Paris and soon moves in with Dionne and CeCe after answering their advert for a flatmate.

But little do they know that their lives will change, and not necessarily for the better, causing rifts between them as jealousy and hurt pulls them apart.

With three main characters I was expecting to like one girl more than the other but I was pleasantly surprised to like all three at different stages throughout the book and was routing for them all to make it in their chosen field.

This is a fast paced novel with plenty of twists and turns throughout to keep me enthralled, I couldn't put it down so meant some very late nights reading (and not very productive days at work the next day!!).  This book had it all, ambition, glitz and glamour (as well as the pitfalls) of the fashion world, jealousy, romance and as you'd expect from a book that fits perfectly into the bonkbuster category, the odd sex scene or two...

I'd like to thank Carrie and Harper Collins for sending me a copy of this book to review.  This book would be perfect beach reading for your holiday so why not pick up a copy today from Amazon, it's available in paperback or Kindle format.
