Books Read: C.L. Taylor - The Accident

Sue Jackson has the perfect family but when her teenage daughter Charlotte deliberately steps in front of a bus and ends up in a coma she is forced to face a very dark reality.

Retracing her daughter’s steps she finds a horrifying entry in Charlotte’s diary and is forced to head deep into Charlotte’s private world. In her hunt for evidence, Sue begins to mistrust everyone close to her daughter and she’s forced to look further, into the depths of her own past.

Sue will do anything to protect her daughter. But what if she is the reason that Charlotte is in danger?

With her fifteen year old daughter Charlotte lying in a coma, Sue needs to try and work out what exactly happened. She's sure there's more to the story than Charlotte simply being distracted and walking out into the road but everyone else is saying it was just an accident. Sue suspects everyone is hiding something, Charlotte's boyfriend, best friend and even her own husband Brian.

We also get a glimpse into Sue's past revealing details of an extremely abusive relationship, both physical and mental, with her ex which eventually led her to have a breakdown. So is history repeating itself and the stress of Charlotte's accident pushing Sue to the brink of another breakdown?

Alongside Sue's mission to discover the truth, there are a few other strange things happening as the past and present interlink which all adds to the drama.

Although this is not the author's first novel, it is her first psychological thriller and was a tense gripping read full of secrets and lies.  Uncomfortable reading at times but compelling at the same time.

I'd like to thank Lydia at Avon Books for sending me a proof copy of this book to review.
