Guest Book Review: Rhoda Baxter - Doctor January

Reviewed by Tanya Phillips

If you keep looking back, you might miss what's standing right in front of you...

Six months after a painful break-up from Gordon, Beth's finally getting her life back on track. She has faith in her own scientific theories and is willing to work hard to prove them. She's even beginning to see Hibs, her dedicated lab partner, as more than just a lousy lothario in a lab-coat and goggles.

So when Gordon arrives back from America without warning and expects to be welcomed back into Beth's arms, she's totally thrown. She also quickly begins to see that Gordon isn't the man she thought he was - Hibs has always held a candle for Beth, but he can only wait so long for her to realise there's more to life than being patronised and bullied by the one who's meant to love and protect her.

Will Beth forsee the explosive nature beneath Gordon's placid surface before he destroys everything she's worked for, both inside and outside the lab?

I was really eager to review Doctor January as the characters are all based in a science lab and this was an interest of mine.  All I can say is I was not disappointed and in fact could not put it down and finished it in one sitting.

Beth is doing a PhD along with fellow student Vik and a colleague Hibs.  They work under Roger who is arrogant and thinks that Beth is useless and does not know what she is doing.  I found myself hoping that he would recognise all her hard work that she puts in alongside Hibs to prove her findings.

Beth is not very confident and most of this is due to her ex-boyfriend Gordon that upped and left for America and has not even remembered her birthday.  Beth is still in love with him even though he was controlling and demanding.   She even gave up her hobby of photography to please him.  Unknown to Beth the commitment phobia Hibs fancies her; in fact you could say he is in love with her.  He tries to build up her confidence and to make her realise how controlling Gordon was.

The characters of Beth, Hibs and Vik are great and the camaraderie that they have in their working and social lives is great.  I liked the sub plots in the book and the way that the characters develop.  I would recommend this book as a great light read and one to pick up when you see it.

I'd like to thank Liz at Choc Lit for sending us a copy of this eBook and Tanya for reviewing it for me.
