Irish Fiction Week Review: Nicola Doherty - Maggie does Meribel

Maggie can't wait for her first ever skiing holiday. New Year's Eve in the French Alps with her boyfriend Leo and two other couples: what could be more romantic? She's picturing hot chocolate, romantic snowball fights and evenings snuggled together in front of the log fire. What she didn't picture is near-death experiences on the mountains, falling out with Leo and sharing a chalet with the unbearable Jenny. When she meets Sylvain, a gorgeous ski instructor, the line between harmless flirting and full-on misbehaviour becomes ... well, blurry. I had originally planned to wait until all 5 books in the Girls on Tour series had been published before reading the combined book, having previously reviewed the first book Poppy does Paris, but I downloaded a copy of Maggie does Meribel after being offered a review copy to include as part of this Irish Fiction week.  

As the title suggests we meet Maggie as she's heading off on a post Christmas holiday to the slopes of Meribel with her boyfriend Leo and a group of his friends that she's never met.  Having never skied before she's more looking forward to the Apres Ski fun and spending quality time alone with Leo but as is almost always the case things don't quite go to plan.  Enter Jenny, the only singleton in the group who seems to flirt with every man she meets especially Leo... 

Nicola Doherty certainly knows how to write comedy as I found myself chuckling almost from the first page, from the cringeworthy scenario at the airport in Boots chemist to Maggie's escapades on the ski slopes, I could picture them so clearly and I would have died of embarrassment if any of them had happened to me!  

Maggie was a character that I think most of us females could relate to, she certainly reminded me of myself in my younger, hopeless romantic days, so I was wanting her to get her happy ever after that she was clearly desperate for...   It's hard for me to write any more without giving anything away so all I'll add is if you're after a quick, fun read then this book is perfect for you. 

Having now read Poppy and Maggie's stories, I'm now looking forward to catching up with the two books I've missed, Lily does LA and Rachel does Rome, and the final book in the series The Girls Take Manhattan which is published next week.
