Dida seems to have it all – a chocolate and banana cake recipe to die for, lovely kids (most of the time!) and a great lifestyle. But what good is a fabulous home, when your marriage has more cracks than a pavlova and your husband is having it off with half of Lithuania?
Three retro fabulous friends, in love with all things vintage, run their dream business from the faded grandeur of a rescued cinema. When that dream comes under threat, they’ll do whatever it takes to save it.
Can you tell us a little bit about your latest book The Vintage Cinema Club?
The Vintage Cinema Club centres on Izzy, Luce and Dida, who have a fabulous vintage shop in a wonderful old cinema building. When their dream comes under threat they have to fight to save it.
It’s about the tangles of their very different lives and struggles, all bound together by their friendship. Think sassy, funny, warm hearted, happy...with a dash of sour to temper the sweetness.
If you fancy a summer hanging out with friends in country villages, with a great vintage vibe, a taste of France thrown in, and strands of love and heartache woven through, step this way. The only drawback is how much you might miss them when it’s over.
Where did the inspiration come from?
The inspiration first came from a trip around vintage shops in Brighton. I came home and decided a vintage shop, shared by friends, would make a great setting for a book. I used to go to furniture auctions in an old cinema building in Matlock, and that was a perfect space to choose for a location, especially since Matlock has unexpectedly become the vintage capital of the area lately. As the two ideas collided, The Vintage Cinema Club was born.
Which character did you have the most fun creating, Izzy, Luce, or Dida?
Izzy, Luce and Dida are very different characters, and just like with real people, I love different parts of each of them. In the end I think I loved writing Izzy most, because she’s the character who goes the furthest.
If you had to describe each of the characters in one word, what would it be? (mean I know so might let you have 3...)
Izzy: creative, firey
Luce: thoughtful, silky
Dida: strong, determined
What can we expect from you next?
A Vintage Christmas treat.
What is the best writing advice you have ever received?
Never give up.
Do you set yourself a daily/weekly writing target?
I’ve avoided targets, because I write at very different speeds at different times, depending what I’m working on. One book took six weeks, whereas another took almost a year. Lately I’ve surprised myself by how much I can produce under pressure.
If you could write in a collaboration with another author, who would you like to write with?
My first novel was a happy accident, that happened when a friend, Sue Hepworth, from writing class asked me to co-write a book with her. Our book, Plotting for Beginners, came out in 2006, and was a paperback best seller. I love working with Sue, so I’d have to choose her.
If you could write another style of genre, what genre would it be and why?
I’d like to try hen lit - for chicks who’ve grown up. And I also have a non fiction project involving old letters which I’d like to explore.
Are you going to treat yourself to something nice to celebrate the publication of your novel?
A bottle of prosecco, in an ice bucket.
Have you anything exciting planned for publication day?
My daughter is getting married a few days after the book comes out, so I’ll probably be doing last minute wedding preparations.
