Guest Book Review: Michele Gorman - The Curvy Girls Baby Club

Reviewed by Kelly Spillane

LOVE, LIFE AND A CHRISTMAS DUE DATE

Ellie is fresh back from her honeymoon and can’t wait to share her news with her best friends Katie and Jane. To everyone’s surprise, mother-of-two Jane has news of her own… The women are due a day apart and Katie can’t wait to be an honorary auntie to the babies.

But it’s hard to keep your sense of humour, not to mention your self-esteem, in the face of hemorrhoids and elasticated waistbands. Add a clingy mother-in-law, a career in cardiac arrest and a sex life that makes Mother Theresa look lusty, and soon their lives are as out of control as their bodies.

As the co-founders of The Curvy Girls Club, where loving yourself is the only rule, will the friends be able to practice what they preach?

Ellie, Jane and Katie, who we first met earlier this year in The Curvy Girls Club are back in this great novella. Since we last met the girls, Katie has moved in with her boyfriend Rob, Ellie has gotten married and Jane is the co-presenter of a morning television program. Then all three of the girls find out that they are pregnant at the same time and The Curvy Girls Club soon turns into The Curvy Girls Baby Club.

What I loved the most about this book is that is told from the point of Ellie and Jane. I like the character of Katie but after reading a whole book told from her point of view, it was nice to be able to see this story from the view of someone else. Pixie does not feature in this novell, but in my opinion she is not missed, as she was my least favourite character while reading the book. This book worked very well with only three characters and if anything I thought it was even better than The Curvy Girls Club.

The Curvy Girls Baby Club is a novella so it is very short, sweet and to the point. Although, I can't help wishing that it was just a little bit longer because I really enjoyed it. The story moved at a very fast pace with the start of each chapter telling us how far along in their pregnancies that girls are. However, I did feel that it ended kind of abruptly, I would have liked to have gotten an insight into what happens after the labor ward. I flew through the story and I hope that we will get to meet up with these characters again some time in the future.

I found this novella funny but also very realistic. It shows problems that occur during preganacy as well as problems that can occur in everyday life, such as problems at work and not getting along with your in-laws. The novella keeps you turning the page and even has a few little twists and surprises thrown in to keep you guessing.

I really enjoyed being able to catch up with these characters again. Although these characters also feature in The Curvy Girls Club, this can be read as a stand alone. A very enjoyable, light, easy read. Well written and will keep you thoroughly entertained throughout.

I'd like to thank Michele for sending us a copy of The Curvy Girls Baby Club for Kelly to review.
