Books Read: Suzanne Rindell - The Other Typist

New York City, 1924: the height of Prohibition. In a police precinct on the lower East Side young typist Rose Baker coolly records the confessions of killers and gangsters. But when a new typist arrives - the captivating Odalie - Rose finds a true partner in crime. Flitting between sparkling speakeasies by night and their work at the precinct by day, the girls are drawn further into a dark, glamorous world. Soon Rose's fascination with Odalie and her glittering life turns to obsession. But does she know the real Odalie, and what will happen if she dares to find out?

Rose Baker is a quiet, naive young woman working as a typist in a police station where her main job entails her to sit in the interviews and type up the statements of the various crimes that have been committed.  Despite being exposed to the seedier side of life she pretty much blends into the background then returns to her boarding house at night until it's time to return to work the next day.

Then a new typist Odalie arrives who is the complete opposite to Rose in every way and she is immediately captivated by her and before long she's being introduced to a whole different lifestyle to what she's even known.  But as much as Rose is obsessed with Odalie, Odalie is not quite who she seems either...

This book had so much potential but sadly it fell very flat for me and I really struggled reading it as it was such a slow burner and took too long time to get going that I lost interest pretty quickly.  If it wasn't for the fact that I'd received it to review I probably would have given up on it but even though I can't say I loved this book I'm glad I did carry on reading until the end just for closure as things definitely heated up in the final third of the book!

I'm sure there are many of  you out there who would find this book an enjoyable read but sadly it wasn't for me.

  1. Oh no. I'm disappointed that it's a slow burner. I was looking forward to reading this. I might put it back a bit and read some other books first. :) x
