Books Read: Darcie Boleyn - Wish Upon a Christmas Cake

The most wonderful time of the year?

Katie Warham has just one wish this year…to have the best Christmas ever!

If only she could lock herself away in a cloud of flour and sugar at her cosy little tearoom, Crumbtious Cakes, instead of spending the festive season trapped with her judgemental mother, crazy Aunt Gina and loved-up celebrity brother Carl…

But Katie never expected her ex-boyfriend, widower Sam – and his two adorable children – to turn up on her doorstep. She didn’t think that any man could tempt her under the mistletoe this year, but Sam might just prove the exception! And as the snow begins to fall and Katie puts the final touches to her famous Christmas cake, she begins to wonder, could her Christmas wish actually come true?

Normally by now I would be well into the swing of my Christmas reading schedule but sadly that is not the case this year as things have been a little hectic lately, and a reading slump hasn't helped either, but I'm hoping that after reading this delightful festive story that I'll get my reading mojo back and will soon be in full-on Christmas mode here on the blog.

The story revolves around thirty-something Katie who has put her heart and soul into making a success of her cake business following a traumatic personal loss which also brought about the end of her relationship with her one true love.  Although boyfriends have come and gone, the person she could always turn to was her beloved granny so it's no wonder she's not really looking forward to spending her first family Christmas without her there to hold the peace especially between Katie and her mother Esther who have a somewhat tempestuous relationship.   But the last thing she expected was to be spending Christmas with the only man she truly loved, and has never really gotten over, especially since it would appear that he did move on without her as he's there with his two young children.

From the opening chapter which saw Katie's friend and business partner Ann getting Katie to make a wish using a Christmas cake, well when nothing else is close to hand why not, to the epilogue which was a truly heartwarming conclusion, this was just the perfect read.  Although we don't get to know what Katie wished for we can make an educated guess and it would seem that wishes do come true but of course things are not always smooth sailing along the way.

I loved the whole Katie, Sam romance story and have to admit to having a chuckle and a few aww moments when reading the interactions that they had when trying to develop a relationship when young children are a part of it. I'm sure a lot of parents, and even those without children but have been around them, will have been in similar situations to the post-cinema Holly, I know I have..

Although this is ultimately a romance story at heart, there is actually a lot more going on than first meets the eye. It was interesting to see the interactions between Katie and Esther, especially as the picture painted of Esther is so different to the way she is acting,  And as for Karl, Katie's famous actor brother, I loved his decision to be open about his relationship which despite this being the 00's is sadly a situation that still sees a lot of people hiding their true identity in the public eye.

So settle down with a Hot Chocolate, and a slice of Christmas Cake of course, and enjoy reading this delightful story this Winter.  I'd like to thank Carina UK for my copy of the book to review via NetGalley.
