Today it's my pleasure to welcome author Lisa Hobman to the blog to talk about her latest book A Seaside Escape which was published last month.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your writing journey?
Writing is something I’ve always loved. As a teenager I kept note books with stories in and was recently handed these by my parents when they were moving house. It was a blast to look back on them. I never imagined writing a full novel and having it published so having this happen has been a dream come true.
If you had to give an elevator pitch for A Seaside Escape, what would it be?
It’s a story about realistic characters dealing with loss, healing and falling in love, surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Scottish Highlands.
What would you say are the essential ingredients for writing the perfect romance novel?
Passion, commitment and enthusiasm. But wine and chocolate help 😉
Describe Mallory in three words
Curvy, loveable, realistic
If you get a block during the initial writing phase, how do you work your way through it?
I walk away and do something else. There is no point forcing things because it would be obvious to the reader, I feel. If the words aren’t flowing I have a change of scenery, walk the dog, read a book, watch TV, etc, until the fog clears.
What would you say is the hardest thing about writing?
Distractions are my biggest problem. I get side-tracked by social media. I’m a master procrastinator. Especially if I know I’m coming to the end of a story I’ve loved writing and I don’t want it to be over.
What essentials do you need to have close to hand when you are in writing mode?
Tea and lots of it! Snacks are good too as I forget to eat when I’m enthralled in a plot! I also have my little black dog to cuddle if I’m writing an emotional scene.
If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring author, what would it be?
Write something you would love to read yourself. That way, your passion will shine through.
What writers inspire you?
So many! Lisa Jewell, Lulu Taylor, Melynda Price. But I also love Emily Bronte, JD Salinger and Jane Austen.
If you could go on a writing retreat anywhere in the world, where would you like to go and why?
The Scottish Highlands. I live in Scotland but the highlands are really what inspired me to write my first novel and I usually find my mind flooded with ideas when I visit there.
Do you treat yourself to something to celebrate the publication of your books?
A nice chilled glass of Prosecco and a meal out with my family usually. For A Seaside Escape we had a wonderful meal at Paxton House in the Scottish Borders at their pop-up restaurant.
And finally what can we expect from you next?
I’m currently procrastinating around the end of my second novel for Aria Fiction. I’ve really enjoyed spending time with these characters. It’s a heart-warming romance set in a little seaside village close to where I live on the East coast of Scotland and I’m enjoying the excuse to visit there frequently for research!
I also have a third novel in my ‘Sonic Idols’ rock star series to come but that will be a while yet. I will just keep writing until the ideas stop completely (although I’m hoping that never happens.)
