Crime reporter Henning Juul thought his life was over when his young son was murdered. But that was only the beginning…
Determined to find his son’s killer, Henning doggedly follows an increasingly dangerous trail, where dark hands from the past emerge to threaten everything. His ex-wife Nora is pregnant with another man’s child, his sister Trine is implicated in the fire that killed his son and, with everyone he thought he could trust seemingly hiding something, Henning has nothing to lose … except his own life.
I'd like to thank Anne Cater from Random Things Through my Letterbox for inviting me to be a part of this blog tour and Karen at Orenda Books for my copy of Killed to review.
Thomas Enger is a new author to read for myself as Louise reviewed the previous book in the series, you can read her review of Cursed here. But I needn't have worried about reading a book that is the fifth and final book in the Henning Juul series as there is a handy guide to major characters and the part they have played in the series so far which as a newbie to the series I found really beneficial.
From the outset the dramatic tension leapt from the page as a cat and mouse game was in play between Henning Juul, trying to seek justice for the death of his beloved son, and the criminal masterminds who would do whatever it takes to evade capture. This multi-layered plot unfolds from multiple viewpoints so that we can really get into the mindsets of all the major characters at play which certainly helped me to understand what was going on.
Henning Juul was a tortured soul who had already lost so much, not just his young son but also his marriage to his ex-wife Nora who is now in a relationship with his colleague Iver, so as far as he's concerned he had nothing more to lose. His pain was so clearly evident and drove him on in his mission to uncover the truth no matter what the personal cost may be as he's already lost everything that mattered to him so what more could they take from him?
In retrospect I wish I had managed to find the time to read the other books in the series to follow the action from the beginning but the fact that I hadn't read the previous books did not deter me. The author drip fed sufficient nuggets of information that I was soon completely drawn into the angst of Henning and was spurring him on in his quest to get the answers he so desperately wanted and needed. Does justice prevail? Well I'm not going to spoil it for you so you'll have to read it for yourself to find out!
Even though I have started the series in reverse order with the final book in the series this hasn't deterred me from buying the remaining books in the series so that I can go back and read from the beginning. I already had Burned (book 1) as well as Cursed (book 4) plus this one so have now bought copies of Pierced and Scarred to complete my collection. I'm sure that once I get the chance to read the rest of the books it will give me an ever greater understanding of the drama that concluded in this fantastic book. Now that this series has come to a conclusion I'm interested to find out what we can expect from Thomas Enger in the future.
As I have eBooks of both Cursed and Killed, I have decided to offer someone else the chance to catch up on this dramatic series by giving away the paperback copies I received from Orenda Books.
