Books Read: The Bridal Party by J G Murray

Sometimes friendship can be murder...

It's the weekend of Clarisse's bridal party, a trip the girls have all been looking forward to. Then, on the day of their flight, Tamsyn, the maid of honour, suddenly backs out. Upset and confused, they try to make the most of the stunning, isolated seaside house they find themselves in.

But, there is a surprise in store - Tamsyn has organised a murder mystery, a sinister game in which they must discover a killer in their midst. As tensions quickly boil over, it becomes clear to them all that there are some secrets that won't stay buried...

I'd like to thank Anne Cater from Random Things Tours for inviting me to be a part of this blog tour and Corvus Books for my ecopy of The Bridal Party to review.

As the title suggests the story revolves a group of friends, Clarisse, Nada, Afreya, Gaia and Elana, heading off to a secluded house in Jersey for a hen weekend but from the outset things do not go to plan.  But as we soon discover nothing about this weekend is as it seems and soon we realise that there's a more sinister game in play... one that has been a long time in the planning and one that is ultimately about seeking revenge.

The tension built from the opening chapter with its mysterious abandoned bag on a baggage carousel which would be enough to send alarm bells ringing.  Add into the mix a house in the middle of nowhere with no phone reception or wifi, and then of course the theme of the weekend, a murder/mystery game, which is all meant as a bit of fun until it seems that someone has other ideas as strange, sinister things start happening.

We follow events over the course of the fateful weekend but at the same time we are also provided flashbacks from the past which provide us with a background of the group of friends and an insight into their dynamics.  And it's not long before we discover the motive behind everything that is happening and it's only when we reach the dramatic conclusion that we see everything that had been planned out so meticulously come to fruition.

It's hard to believe that The Bridal Party is the author's debut novel as it had me hooked from the first page to the last constantly on the look out for clues trying to figure out what was going on.  It was everything I look for in a thriller, great plot, perfect setting and characters that weren't particularly likeable.  If this is the standard of his writing I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us next.
