I'd like to thank Anne Cater from Random Things Tours for inviting me to be a part of this blog tour and Headline for my copy of The First Time I Saw You to review.

When I started reading The First Time I Saw You I didn't expect to become so emotionally invested in the story but Emma Cooper has done it again, written a book that will take the reader on an emotional rollercoaster along with the characters.  We follow the story of Sophie and Samuel as they meet, fall in love, and overcome more than their fair share of obstacles along the way.

From the outset it was clear that Sophie and Samuel were polar opposites, Sophie was very much a solitary person, focused solely on her career but as we get to know her we soon discover the tragic past that has affected her so deeply. Can her ice barriers be broken down to let someone else into her life?  Samuel by contrast was the complete opposite, he was very much of the mindset work to live rather than it being his sole purpose. He had so much joie de vivre about him and over time as we get to meet and fall in love with his mad Irish family, we can clearly get to see where he gets his passion from. Who wouldn't want to become part of this loving family?

Told in alternating viewpoints, we discover how Sophie and Samuel feel and react to the events that bring them together then ultimately tear them apart, neither knowing the full extent as to what is going on in the others life. As the weeks progress we see how Sophie's whole outlook on life softens and takes on a whole different direction from what she had mapped out in her planned, organised life.  But it was Samuel's journey that had me more invested as I was rooting for him as he adapted to the changes that life had brought him. But ultimately it's their story, can they rebuild themselves and find their way back to one another again?

It's hard to actually say much more without giving away spoilers but it's fair to say that The First Time I Saw You is a multi-layered story full of poignant and serendipitous moments, misunderstandings and challenges for both Sophie and Samuel interspersed with some hilarious comedy moments.  And just when I thought I'd managed to escape the tears, then the Epilogue comes along that might have left me with leaky eyes!
