You may have noticed that the blog has been a little quiet of late as I've been struggling with a few things that have seriously affected my energy levels and in turn my reading mojo. Thankfully things look to be sorting themselves out and I'll hopefully have a few reviews to share soon but in the meantime I put a shout out on Twitter offering authors the chance to host some guest features on the blog.
Today it's my pleasure to kick off the latest features with a guest post from Victoria Walters, who I first met 5 years ago, to talk about some of her favourite cosy mysteries.
I love reading cosy mystery novels, and watching cosy crime on the TV, so much so I decided to write my own! Thank you, Sharon, for inviting me on to your blog to share my favourite mysteries that you can curl up with and get cosy reading this autumn….
I think everyone has heard of Richard Osman’s debut novel! It’s a fun mystery about four friends living in a retirement village who meet weekly to discuss unsolved murders, and then one happens on their doorstep! Quirky and charming, it’s been a huge hit and I think the rest of the series will be too.
No cosy mystery list is complete without Agatha Christie, aka the queen of crime! This is an ingenious standalone mystery about ten strangers invited to an isolated island in 1939. And one by one they are murdered! I definitely didn’t see the twist ending coming and it really has a creepy atmosphere so it's perfect for Halloween reading.
Book one in the series by Jacqueline Winspear. Set in 1929 in London, this introduces the amateur detective and gives us the story of how she decided to work in crime. A coming of age story mixed with a murder mystery, Maisie is a character you’ll instantly root for.
The Queen investigating crimes?! I was immediately drawn to this idea and it’s so much fun taking a peak behind the scenes and imagining the Queen solving a murder. If you like The Crown, this will be right up your street!
This is a YA murder mystery set at a Vermont boarding school. It introduces our young true crime fan main character Stevie as she investigates a mysterious kidnapping that happened at her new school years ago. The first in a really fun series. Think Harry Potter meets Nancy Drew!
Poirot is probably the most famous literary detective and this is his best mystery set aboard the glamorous Orient Express! He has to investigate a murder trapped on the train with the killer. Another fantastic twist ending from Agatha Christie, definitely one to add to your reading list.
Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death
The first in this British cosy mystery series sees Agatha Christie retire from her PR job and moved to the quiet Cotswolds but unfortunately, murder follows her! This is a really funny series and you’ll love to hate Agatha as she sets about trying to find a killer and navigate her love life. This is Bridget Jones meet Miss Marple!
Murder at the House on the Hill
Finally, I had to include my own cosy mystery on the list! It’s all about crime bookshop owner Nancy Hunter and her grandmother Jane who are invited to a grand house in their village, Dedley End, but unfortunately someone is killed there. The unlikely detective duo set about finding the murderer and I think fans of Miss Marple and The Thursday Murder Club will enjoy this fun, cosy mystery set in the Cotswolds.
If you pick up any of these mysteries, I really hope you enjoy them! And don’t forget to curl up with your favourite hot drink and a blanket, light a candle, and get cosy before you start reading…
