Crime Fiction Week Review: Marcia Clark - Killer Ambition

Would you kill to protect your career?

Deputy DA Rachel Knight and Detective Bailey Keller are catapulted into the most high-profile investigation of their careers when the teenage daughter of superstar director Russell Antonovich, one of Hollywood's most powerful men, is kidnapped.

Things go wrong fast. The young girl's body is found abandoned in the trunk of a car. And Rachel's hunt for the killer puts her on a collision course with some of the most celebrated players in the film industry - and into conflict with her own boss, who is desperate to stay on their good side.

It seems the glittering surface of Hollywood covers a darkness to match the most depraved criminals. But Rachel will bring the truth to light... no matter who wants it to stay hidden.

At first it would appear that young Hayley Antonovich, daughter of Hollywood producer Russell, has staged her own kidnapping with her boyfriend Brian but when her body is discovered in a car boot, and his body subsequently discovered, that theory begins to fall by the wayside.

So now it's down to DA Rachel Knight and Detective Bailey Keller to put the pieces of the puzzle together to find out what went wrong.  But that's easier said than done when it feels that the whole of Hollywood's glitterati, including Russell, are out to discredit Rachel and throw her off her game. Will she be able to ride out the media storm and bring the killer to justice?

This isn't particularly a whodunnit as it's pretty evident from quite early on who the killer is but it's more a case of finding out why and how to prove it amongst all the politics of Hollywood that's the main element of the story.  I've read that Marcia Clark is a former LA prosecutor and so it's clear that she's used her expertise for the legal elements of this story.

Marcia Clark is an author whose books I had heard of before but have never managed to get around to reading so I'm glad that I was sent a copy of her latest book, Killer Ambition, by Kerry from Hodder & Stoughton, as she has now been added to my list of authors whose back books I need to try and find the time to read... too many books and not enough time definitely applies to me at the moment.
