Guest Book Review: Samantha Young - Hero

Reviewed by Louise Wykes

Alexa Holland's father was her hero-until her shocking discovery. Ever since, Alexa has worked to turn her life in a different direction and forge her own identity outside of his terrible secrets. But when she meets a man who's as damaged by her father's mistakes as she is, Alexa must help him.

Caine Carraway wants nothing to do with Alexa's efforts at redemption, but it's not so easy to push her away. Determined to make her hate him, he brings her to the edge of her patience and waits for her to walk away. But his actions only draw them together and, despite the odds, they begin an intense and all-consuming affair.

Only Caine knows he can never be the white knight that Alexa has always longed for, and when they're on the precipice of danger, he finds he'll do anything to protect either one of them from being hurt again . . .

Alexa Holland turns up for work as a photographer’s assistant one day and walks straight into a room with the one man who cannot stand Alexa, his name is Caine Carraway.  It’s nothing that Alexa has done but Alexa’s father allowed Caine’s mother to die of a drug overdose years ago and then later, Caine’s father committed suicide and left Caine to go into the care system.  There’s an altercation between Alexa and Caine and because of Caine’s influence, Alexa loses her job.   After Alexa confronts Caine in his offices at the company he owns, Caine decides to employ Alexa as his PA but intends to make her life an absolute misery.  As Alexa has no other employment prospects, she reluctantly agrees to take the position on and that’s when the fireworks really start.

I adored the heat in the build up to the dramatic scene where Caine and Alexa finally give in to the sparks that have been between them since their first tumultuous meeting.  The air practically fizzes with electricity as Alexa proves she is just as stubborn as Caine himself.  I liked the fact that the sex scenes in the book added to the narrative flow and weren’t just “added on” to make the book sexy.  As Caine and Alexa decide to just have sex with each other with no strings attached, the reader is just impatient for them both to realise that despite their differences and history, they may be just what the other needs in their lives.

Along the way, Alexa meets Effie, Caine’s elderly but lively neighbour who is instantly drawn to Alexa’s sparkiness and knows that Alexa and Caine would make a really great couple if they could only both deal with their own issues.

I loved this book, it was sexy, hot, emotional and there was an element of mystery and thriller too about the story which kept me turning the pages long into the night.  I loved the writing in this book as it took me along with Caine and Alexa on their difficult journey to their own happy ever after.  Like Alexa says in the book, you can’t get a happy ever after with everyone in your lives but a happy ever after with the right person makes up for that.  I loved that I was taken on an emotional and highly passionate adventure with these two young people who discovered that sometimes children do have to pay for the sins of the parents.  I would highly recommend this book and am delighted to have discovered Samantha’s work and hope to read some more soon.

Thanks Louise for your fab review.  I'd also like to thank Clara at Little Brown for sending a copy of Hero to Louise.
