Hope Anderson is at a crossroads. After six years with her boyfriend, she is no longer sure what she wants, and when her father becomes ill she heads to her family's cottage at Sunset Beach in North Carolina to make some difficult decisions.
Tru Walls has been summoned across an ocean from where he was born and raised in Zimbabwe by a letter from a man claiming to be his father. In journeying to Sunset Beach, Tru hopes to unravel the mystery surrounding his mother's life, but the letter will lead him in an unexpected direction.
When these two strangers' paths cross, their chance encounter sets in motion a heart-breaking story - one that will transcend decades, continents and the workings of fate.
It's been a number of years since I've read and reviewed a Nicholas Sparks book although I do have copies of his last couple of books, See Me and Two by Two, that I've bought but not had the chance to read yet. So when I was contacted by Sophie at Midas PR to review for the blog tour I didn't hesitate to say yes.
Hope and Tru meet by chance one day on a beach whilst staying at the beach houses of their respective parents. Hope is in town as part of the bridal party for her friend's wedding, whereas Tru is about to meet his father for the very first time despite being in his forties. Despite the differences in their circumstances, Hope is on a break from her on-off relationship of six years, and Tru lives and works in Zimbabwe, there's an instantaneous attraction between them that they can't ignore and over the course of the weekend they fall in love.
Every Breath is a story in two parts; Part 1 introduces us to Hope and Tru and their love story but then we fast forward almost thirty years when we meet Hope again, a retired divorcee who has returned to the place where she was happiest. She's hoping that fate will play its part, along with the letter that she's left in a mailbox at 'Kindred Spirit' - a place where she and Tru had visited many years before where they had read some of the mementos that had been left, some of love, some filled with loss, others of painful memories, but all in some form inspirational. It's with this in mind that Tru feels the same way and has returned to discover the letter that Hope had left for him...
In true Nicholas Sparks style he presents us with an epic love story, one where both Hope and Tru have to take a journey of self-discovery and make important decisions, no matter how painful that might be for them both, as to what they really want out of their lives. It's a story of reflection, regrets, family, debilitating illnesses but at the heart of it, the one thing I think we all secretly wish for, everlasting love.
However, what makes this story even more poignant is that despite it being a work of fiction it was a real life trip to Kindred Spirit that sparked the inspiration behind Every Breath. It sounds like such a magical place for locals and visitors alike.
