Books Read: Trap by Lilja Sigurdardóttir

Happily settled in Florida, Sonja believes she’s finally escaped the trap set by unscrupulous drug lords. But when her son Tomas is taken, she’s back to square one … and Iceland.

Her lover, Agla, is awaiting sentencing for financial misconduct after the banking crash, and Sonja refuses to see her. And that’s not all … Agla owes money to some extremely powerful men, and they’ll stop at nothing to get it back.

With her former nemesis, customs officer Bragi, on her side, Sonja puts her own plan into motion, to bring down the drug barons and her scheming ex-husband, and get Tomas back safely. But things aren’t as straightforward as they seem, and Sonja finds herself caught in the centre of a trap that will put all of their lives at risk…

I'd like to thank Anne Cater from Random Things Tours for inviting me to be a part of this blog tour and Orenda Books for my ecopy of Trap to review.

Although Trap is the second in a planned trilogy you can read it as a standalone but I personally would recommend that you do read Snare first as it's a great introduction to Sonja and the many adversaries that she comes into contact with.  And having just savoured Trap I am looking forward to reading the concluding part of the story whenever it's ready.

From the offset the tension is palpable in Trap as we see Sonja and her young son Tomas safely tucked away in a caravan park in Florida or so she thinks.  But little does she know that her ex Adam has been tracking her every move and before too long he steps back into her life and bringing with it everything that she had been trying to escape from.  With Adam having custody of Tomas, Sonja is forced to agree to whatever demands Adam makes of her even if it means getting back into the sinister underworld life that she wanted no part of.

I really felt for Sonja as she seemingly had no power to refuse to the demands Adam made of her, as he held the one thing most precious to her, even if it did put her life in threat of danger and/or capture with every dangerous trip that she made across the borders of Holland and Iceland.  Although at the same time she was trying to make the most of a bad situation and make her own plans to escape once and for all from the clutches of Adam.   The situation that Sonja finds herself in is a lifestyle that I couldn't even imagine being caught up in so can't even begin to imagine the torment that she must have been suffering at the hands of her devious ex.

At the same time we see Sonja's girlfriend Agla also struggling with her own demons, awaiting trial for financial irregularities along with Adam and their boss.  I never really warmed to Agla in Snare and I can't really say I did in this story either.  Considering the responsibility and power that she had had in her job, she seemed really weak and needy in regards to her relationship with Sonja and so uptight.

The one I really felt for the most was young Tomas who was caught in the middle of the dramatic tug-of-war between his parents.  Sonja did her best to protect him from the seedy life that his father had them all caught up in and it made me hope that nothing bad would ever happen to her so that she could always be there for Tomas as surely Adam has to get his comeuppance eventually.

Once again we as readers are caught up in the action-packed, corrupt world of financial crime, money laundering and drug smuggling that Sonja and co are involved in.  At times there is danger of things going into too much detail, especially with regards to the financial crime aspect of the storyline, but Lilja Sigurdardóttir has the knack of explaining it in laymans terms that it doesn't feel like you're reading a text book!

The short chapter format of this story really worked well in creating tension and amping up the drama so that you constantly find yourself thinking I'll just read one more chapter to see what happens next and before you know it you're two thirds of the way through the book and decide that you may as well continue reading until the end... no matter how late it is and what plans you have for the next day!

I hope it's not too long a wait before we can read the conclusion of this exciting series... no pressure Lilja 😉
